Willing to accept a correction if it isn't a huss but it looked like a huss to me coz of the jaw shape and patterning, here's a different view.....

......what do you think? Should've taken a pic of it's mouth, that would've been a better pic to make a decision from. 'll leave it to the jury, if it's decided it's not a huss then so be it, I'll have to try catching another!

Bummer. Oh well, if it's a doggy it's a doggy. I really thought it was a huss as it looks v different to any doggies I've caught but I guess it's just local conditions make it look like that or something. An attack of "wishful thinking" perhaps.

See what Gethin and Jon think mate but I'm pretty sure its a dog. Some Huss come in the same markings as doggies and you can't always tell the difference when there small. I think with the type of markings in your photo, if it was a small huss the spots would be bigger.

Yeah, the more I look at it now I think you n cheify are probably right (I think Dils was thinking the same..right Dils?). So pending what Gethyn/Jon say I'll probably be changing that to a woof woof...still, didn't officially record one of them yet for the hunt either so still 3 species!!!!!!

Spots are not always the main feature, many dogs have very misleading big spots, hence why only the nasal flaps and gill slits can be used to 99.99% tell the difference .

Will reply more in a mo.

Nasal flaps are the most obvious difference when checking out a huss and dogfish.

Other differences include the position of the dorsal and anal fins and another is the gill slits. I’ve been trying to locate the paperwork I have to show the differences a lot clearer than I can describe but have so far failed to locate it.

I’ll post on the fin differences again.

But the difference with the LSD and GSD gill slits is the number of slits above the pec fins.

Now the crunch,

I can remember that all 5 are forward of the fin on one specie,
and 2 are above and 3 forward on the other.

But without a flippin fish in front of me (or that missing piece of paperwork) I cannot remember which way.

Now I did phone a friend of mine, who has a book with a picture of a nurse dogfish (bull huss) in, that had 2 above and 3 forward of the pec fin.

Exactly how conclusive all this is I am a little unsure, untill I catch one of each next.

So,

Below are photos of huss

Don't often photograph doggies,

Guilty fish
2 above and 3 forward

Let the audience decide, and no doubt everyone will be checking slits out next time they're fishing.

well done mr 'holmes'{thu}{thu}[M][M]  i'm happy enough to have it down as a huss. I only said it looked doggy, and it does{thu}  And given the big pic in dp's pics it does have a very big head, that was not obvious in the smaller photo{thu}

I came onto the thread late - and saw the big pic straight off and thought huss with the size of the head.

Looks like we need better pics of flaps and slits.
