when they come out of the water most of the time the barbs stick to the skin

[r] yes cheify i was aware of that  but the whole point of the pics and answers is to help identify the difference - otherwise its a bit like say this pic is a "........" because it is and I say it is"   [sa]

What is it that you are trying to get across karen, do you think the shore rockling in my pic is a 3 bearded? Can you not identify the diferences in the Pictures?

I'm not trying to have a go or any thing, just confused as to what you think?

Not at all Scott - the rockling a a big confuser - I am actually in the middle writing of an article on them..... but I am struggling to get over the CLEAR differences - So....its no good saying that the top pic is a 5 bearded if  the only reason given is - I know it is....do you get where I am coming from now? ....with the greatest respect it doesn't explain it very well LOL

Some pictures of rockling are confusing sometimes if you cannot see the barbels - that is why I assumed you must have caught that one to know - its like this pic - no barbels showing - which is it?

and no I didn't take the barbels off - just the background to try to illustrate what I am saying.........it obviously came over wrong! ... I'm not looking for an argument - just constructive information ............[4]

I understand what you are saying and your right, rockling are very confusing and this time last year I was very confused, but the species hunt put an end to that. Once I'd caught a few and seen others that where posted then the diferences became clear to me. The best way to ID fish in my opinion is by looking at photos of the fish when not in the water, because thats when we see them, a lot of fish look totally different when there in the water.

Looking at the pictures I posted, I know the 5 bearded isn't that great but you can defiantly tell the difference and when you catch one they are slimy like a slug. The shore rockling isn't but it does look very similar to the 3 beard but then the colour is the give away.

The pic wasn't altered one bit Scott............. I just took the background out as I pinched the pic [sh] - but if i were to look at it and then your examples .....I would say going on your examples this was  a  5B - when in fact it is a shore....

hence my original question [Hap]

I think that this is a good photo you've used and show an excellent example of the the confusion between rockling ID but going of my pics I would still say a shore rockling not 5b

Karen sorry about the above post, I thought you'd cut of a bit of the fins whilst cutting around the fish, didn't mean this in a bad way{thu}

Thanks for all the replies {thu}, I shouldn't have any trouble telling them apart in future but if I do then I know where to ask (13).
